Happy Volunteers

Every association wants to retain its volunteers, to do so, associations need to find ways to keep their volunteers happy. It is important to know what makes volunteers tick and what gives volunteers a sense of satisfaction. As people continue to volunteer, they will develop a sense of connection to the association.

Here are 5 tips to make volunteers happy:

1.  Be Organized and Considerate

Be prepared for your volunteers. Have everything worked out and set up so volunteers can begin work immediately. Let volunteers know how much time the assignment will take. Project-oriented, rather than ongoing, assignments seem to work particularly well.

2.  Provide Networking Opportunities

Volunteers want to be socially connected. Introduce your volunteers to everyone and show them around. Present your association in a warm, friendly and helpful manner. Offer a time for coffee or lunch. Invite volunteers to your events and follow up to encourage them to attend or even provide help in getting there.

3.  Offer Good Training

Explain, demonstrate and mentor volunteers when executing a new task.
When training a group of volunteers, use adult learning techniques such as group involvement. Anyone who is willing to volunteer for an organization is likely to have a healthy curiosity and willingness to try new things.

4.  Give Thanks

Tell your volunteers frequently that they are doing a good job. Let your volunteers know how they are making a difference. Share success stories about your clients and programs. Bring them up-to-date on progress toward your organization’s goals.

5.  Communicate Often

Regular communication is motivating for volunteers, while the lack of it is one of the chief reasons volunteers become dissatisfied. Ask for effective feedback from volunteers on what worked well and what did not. Be ready to listen to volunteers and respond to concerns immediately.
