How to Develop a Committee of Volunteers

When you’re developing a committee of volunteers, think in terms of creating synergy. New hires, as well as veteran workers, can add a good deal of passion and creativity to a group. Although assertive people help drive a committee, don’t choose everyone who is outgoing. You will need to reach out to a variety of people with different personality traits. Look for thoughtful and dependable people to carry out tasks. Without volunteers and organizers forming committees, no group could function.

Follow these steps to build a great committee for your association:

  1. Find a location for regular meetings. Community centers, restaurants and hotel conference rooms are easy to work with.
  2. Invite people in the specific industry to the meetings. Think of people you know who are good at what they do. Advertise the meeting on social media sites and the local paper.
  3. At the first meeting, listen to people. Make notes of each persons’ area of interest. As you engage individuals to serve on a committee, look for key people who will qualify as officers.
  4. Offer tasks at the first meetings for new member to commit to. When the committee meets, the election of leaders will fall into place.
  5. Have recurring events on a regular basis and offer an invite to the entire community.  The leader of the group is the driving force, so build the committee base that includes a likely person who will serve as chairman.
